Waste Management, Recycling & Upcycling

Limiting the amount of waste that we produce across The Village is a key priority. We're switching to greener alternatives wherever we can!

Waste Management and Recycling

We are committed to ensuring that all of our waste is sorted onsite, and nothing is sent to landfill and therefore, we have partnered with Suez, a company who specilise in recycling and waste management, to support us with this commitment.

We are working on changing disposable products such as takeaway knives and forks to biodegradable alternatives where possible and ensuring that they are extracted from waste streams and processed correctly.

We encourage our customers to support our sustainability efforts and have implemented initiatives to incentivise this, such as asking customers to use reusable cups in Blend Coffee House and charging 25p extra when using disposable cups.

Upcycling

We want all our pre-loved furniture from refurbishments on the Village to be sent to a good home where it can be upcycled and used where it is really needed.

When we need to remove furniture from the Village, we hold open days for our employees so that they can use the furniture either for themselves, friends, family, or donate to charitable causes. All we will ask for a nominal donation that goes towards our chosen charity.

Energy and Reducing Our Carbon Footprint

Our dedicated team of experts continually monitors energy and water consumption to minimize usage and eliminate waste. They work closely with energy consultants, Trident energy, to look at how we can reduce our on-site carbon footprint.

The company is committed to investing in and finding new and innovative ways to reduce its energy consumption;

- Plans are under way to seeking approval to install a Solar Farm as a renewable way to generate electricity for the village.

- Further efforts to reduce energy consumption include replacing traditional boiler systems at The Health Club and at The Spa Hotel with a Combined Heat & Power source unit. This CHP unit uses gas to generate electricity and creates a bi-product of hot water. This is great for us, because we can use this excess heat to warm up our swimming pools!

- We have Air Source Heat Pump’s at many of our Signature Properties including in our Lake View apartments which are considerably more environmentally friendly than traditional gas boilers.

- We are looking into finding ways to use rainwater harvesting where practical for plant irrigation and toilet flushing We are looking at ways of environmentally friendly cooling as an alternative to traditional air con units.

- Our maintenance and security teams already use electric vehicles and equipment. The CHP units generate 52% of Ribby Hall Village's electricity demand on-site. In fact, between July 2022 and July 2023, we conserved over 1.4 million kWh that we'd normally have relied on the national grid to produce!

- We have recently invested in improving our electric vehicle charging points across The Village, to encourage more guests with sustainable vehicles to holiday with us. Currently, we have 7 electric vehicle charging points that are spread out across The Village. Be sure to keep an eye out for them on your next visit.

Procurement & Suppliers

Making sustainable choices in purchasing has been a top priority at Ribby Hall Village for many years, to reduce our carbon footprint and support local businesses. We use over 700 Lancashire-based businesses to supply our goods and services, and the majority of our food suppliers are Lancashire based.

Many of our initiatives have centered on increasing ordering efficiencies, reducing packaging, reducing product wastage and also reducing the number of deliveries to the Village with the aim of lowering our carbon footprint.

We even have our own Village Garden, where we grow produce that is often used in our restaurants and kitchens across the Village. We are working on improving the productivity of the Village Garden to grow more products that are usable in our onsite eateries.

How you can help us help the environment - every little helps!

While staying onsite, support us in our mission by recycling your waste. We have recycling points across the Village and inform our visitors where they can recycle. We have recently invested in improving our EV charging offering across The Village, so we hope you'll visit us in your sustainable vehicle.
